Challenge
Proximus has been actively working to enhance the quality and reliability of its Proximus TV service, continuously striving to address any challenges that arise in connectivity and customer experience, particularly in optimizing its reliance on public internet routes for connectivity to the AWS eu-west-1 region. Public internet paths often introduce increased latency, which can negatively affect real-time applications like TV streaming. This latency issue was particularly problematic for delivering the seamless viewing experience that Proximus customers expect. Additionally, the public internet’s susceptibility to congestion raised concerns about potential packet loss, further degrading service quality and leading to interruptions or poor video performance.
The reliability of public internet connections was another major concern for Proximus. Public routes are prone to outages and slowdowns, which posed a risk of service disruptions for Proximus TV’s production environments. This instability was unacceptable for a service that relies on uninterrupted operation and constant uptime to meet customer expectations. The combination of latency, potential packet loss, and reduced reliability necessitated a more robust and dedicated connectivity solution to ensure a superior customer experience
Solution
To address these challenges, BICS deployed its Cloud Connect solution, leveraging its robust partnership with AWS. The solution provided Proximus with dedicated connectivity to the AWS eu-west-1 region through six 50 Mbps direct connections. This infrastructure eliminated the dependency on public internet routes, ensuring faster and more reliable data transfer. The connections were strategically designed for Proximus TV’s needs, with separate links for production, staging, and development environments. Each environment was equipped with primary and backup links, guaranteeing high availability and minimizing the risk of downtime.
BICS also implemented advanced transport technologies, including Carrier Ethernet and DWDM/OTN, to ensure secure and scalable connectivity. This setup was further enhanced by BICS’ global infrastructure, which includes submarine cables for long-distance data transfer. Additionally, BICS streamlined the integration of Proximus’ systems with its private Virtual Private Routed Network (VPRN), simplifying network operations and improving data flow efficiency. These measures collectively addressed Proximus’ latency, reliability, and performance issues, ensuring a superior and consistent service for Proximus TV customers.
