Industry events offer the opportunity for companies to not only gain greater visibility and connect with potential new business prospects, but also to exchange ideas, knowledge and identify future trends. At BICS, we try to have a presence at as many relevant events as possible, with a busy schedule which takes our team all over the globe. In September alone we are attending six events – either as an exhibitor or speaker – across four continents. Ahead of next month, we’ve profiled each event in brief, with more in-depth information available via the links below.
September 5 – September 7, Kempala, Uganda
First up, BICS is heading to Africa to attend the 11th annual Capacity event, which brings together over 450 senior execs from the continent’s wholesale telecoms industry and beyond. The event will open with a panel session on the importance of infrastructure sharing. Other topics to be discussed include the role of fibreless technology in Africa, how to attract and retain private internet customers, and how to ensure that voice will be an integral service offering from telcos in the future.
Africa is an important market for BICS and we’ve invested significantly in operations and infrastructure in the region in recent years. Last year we launched a PoP (point-of-presence) in Kenya, adding to the number of PoPs and office locations on the continent. The move also completes BICS’ comprehensive and mature infrastructure backbone on the continent.
September 12 – September 14, San Francisco, USA
The American branch of what is likely the largest telecoms industry gathering: Mobile World Congress. The diverse programme features everything from the current challenges of today, to the futuristic technology and opportunities of tomorrow.
The San Francisco event is well-positioned for BICS’ first office in the US, located in the same city and opened in 2015. MWC Americas will offer a great opportunity to catch up with our growing number of digital service provider customers based in Silicon Valley, as well as those that use BICS’ LTE roaming solutions, which includes almost all tier-1 operators in North America.
September 18 – September 19, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
This event will celebrate its 13th year this September, and promises a packed agenda featuring major influencers in the industry, including CEOs from the likes of Etisalat, Batelco and VIVA Bahrain. Almost 1,000 attendees will benefit from senior figures sharing their opinions and predictions on the Internet of Everything, virtualisation and more.
The Middle East is another key market for BICS, with an increasing number of carriers across the region offering LTE roaming services. In fact, BICS research from February this year found that a total of 400 operators across 143 countries worldwide now offer their subscribers LTE roaming sessions, compared with just 75 in 2014.
September 25 – September 28, Marrakech, Morocco
In its sixth year, the Wholesale Agreements and Solutions Group takes place in Marrakech this September. The Group oversees operator-to-operator and operator-to-hub interoperability to ensure members of the GSMA can offer reliable GSM services to their customers.
BICS is an associate member of the GSMA and part of the WAS working group. We hosted WAS #3 in Brussels in 2016. We welcomed over 250 companies and more than 1,000 attendees for the four-day event, and we expect to see similar numbers in Morocco next month. As a GSMA member, BICS works with a diverse range of industry players to develop roaming and interconnect agreement templates and wholesale charging principles for the benefit of the wider telecoms industry.
September 26 – September 27, London, UK
Our CEO Daniel Kurgan will be heading to London with a contingent of the BICS team, to speak on the opening day of Carriers World 2017. Daniel will take part in the keynote panel alongside senior members of Ovum, BT Global Services, Telefónica Business Solutions and Colt Technology Services. The discussion will explore key issues facing carriers today, including how to deliver digital solutions and build reliable end-to-end solutions, as well as the role of emerging technologies in a carrier’s service offering.
Taking place at 9:40am on Tuesday 26th, the keynote will no doubt spark interesting debate from panel members and attendees alike, and set the tone for the two-day event.
September 26 – September 27, Singapore
According to the GSMA, the APAC region has been the biggest contributor to global subscriber growth in recent years: unique mobile subscribers will increase from 2.7 billion in 2016 to 3.1 billion in 2020, and mobile broadband connections will increase from 53% of the total to 72% over the same time period. 4G (and in the future, 5G) developments are continuing apace in the region, with 4G connections in China expected to surpass one billion – three quarters of the total connection base – next year.
BICS played a key role in early telecoms innovation in the APAC region, and in 2015 enabled the world’s first end-to-end VoLTE international call between South Korean operator SK Telecom and Belgian operator Proximus. MVNO Asia will provide a platform to meet MVNOs, operators, analysts and solution providers to exchange ideas about the key issues influencing and affecting this key region.
