The European summer holiday season sees an annual rise in roaming traffic from holiday-makers venturing abroad, armed with their mobile devices. Much of this traffic now travels over our market leading IPX platform and is increasingly focussed on rich data services.
Last summer, BICS witnessed a double digit growth of LTE roaming over its IPX network each month during the last year, and this summer we expect usage to explode again during the holiday season. Since 2014, BICS has experienced a massive 25% month on month growth in LTE roaming traffic, which illustrates the increased demand from end users for high quality data, wherever they are in the world.
Driven by the increased use of roaming services, BICS has enjoyed a rapid increase in traffic levels over the last year. During 2014, capacity usage on the BICS GRX network grew 45% while in the same period IPX transport – comprising of next generation data traffic – grew by 400%.
Nearly all consumers in developed markets now have access to domestic LTE, and with this widespread availability comes the expectation and demand for similar data speeds when users travel abroad. Having identified this demand, operators must replace their existing SS7 signalling network with a new IP signalling infrastructure.
These structural changes require a whole set of commercial agreements and technical interconnections, and by using BICS’ IPX platform, operators are able to ease this transition. Through one single interconnection, with end-to-end quality management, BICS’ IPX platform is able to minimize operators’ efforts, costs and deployment time.
LTE roaming uptake is seeing no signs of slowing down. With over 100 countries and over 235 operators making up the extensive global networks for LTE roaming, the consumers’ strong demand for high speed data roaming services internationally can be met by operators using BICS to provide them with solutions to remain competitive in the market.
This year, LTE roaming will continue to grow in popularity as more countries across the world launch supporting services. With BICS enabling LTE roaming in popular holiday destinations across EMEA, APAC and the Americas, holidaying end users can now enjoy the same domestic speeds as they would at home.
