2015 has been another fascinating year in the telecoms market with the acceleration of next generation service development, built on an IPX platform, and the further explosive growth in usage of international services by consumers.
BICS has been at the centre of many of these changes. The evolution of the BICS IPX platform and the further expansion of LTE roaming services into new markets have changed the nature of international connectivity completely. Driving this change is consumer demand, with data roaming usage exploding both in developed and developing markets.
2015 was also a momentous year for voice and saw BICS undertake the world’s first successful end-to-end international VoLTE (voice over LTE) call, between South Korean operator SK Telecom and Belgian carrier Proximus. The milestone marked the first successful VoLTE interworking relation between international operators, reinforcing BICS’ position at the forefront of telecoms innovation.
BICS also made an impact against telecoms fraud this year. With roaming fraud costing the industry over $6bn each year, cloud-based platform FraudGuard offers the obvious solution. FraudGuard identifies over 100 new threats to carriers daily and has already blocked over 500 million fraudulent call attempts. In June this year, BICS announced that more than 800 of its partners have signed-up to use the cost-effective fraud solution, enabling them to share fraud intelligence information in real-time.
While SMS services previously concentrated on P2P (person-to-person) messaging exchange, the growth of OTT players in the consumer market has shifted the focus of SMS to A2P. Competitive rates and reliability in terms of successfully reaching its target audience means that the potential of A2P messaging is yet to peak
The Africa market remains a priority for BICS, with infrastructure in the region further enhanced with the launch of its revolutionary IP over Satellite solution, RouteFlex, in September. The dynamic service allows flexible prioritisation of data traffic for operators whilst providing a reliable back-up service in challenging environments.
For BICS, 2015 was a hugely successful year focused on meeting the needs of growing markets whilst ensuring the increased demand for voice and data roaming is met with robust infrastructure to support these next generation services. We look forward to continuing this innovation culture into 2016 and beyond.
